At the deepest level, this coming home enables me to see that I am not in the world on pain of good behaviour: I don’t have to prove myself to anyone, or to meet their expectations to be allowed in. I don’t have to believe that the price of access is to disguise most of what I am, to measure up to the gatekeeper’s code. Liberation comes in feeling that code to be irrelevant. I distinguish that from emancipation, which is the ending of the code altogether, and includes liberation.

The abstract individual of classic liberal theory, who is distinguishable only by his preferences, seems to have a new lease of life in the idealized child and the idealized student of educational policy-making. It is a kind of smoothing out that is needed to fit everyone into a format of standards, a uniform trajectory within uniform systems, marked by zero tolerance and best practice.
